Outdoor Adventures in Juneau

Several mushing camps near Juneau offer the opportunity to glide across one of these snowcapped glaciers in a sled towed by a team of Alaskan huskies. It’s the quintessential Alaska experience. Seasoned veterans of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race introduce their dogs and share tricks of the trade. After the ride, participants may cuddle up with the husky puppies and have a picture taken with these adorable future pro athletes.

Fishing enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that Juneau has some of Southeast Alaska’s most abundant angling grounds, especially for salmon. To discover just how important the species is to the local economy, pay a visit to the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery. Located just 2.5 miles from downtown, the hatchery supports the salmon population by fattening the waters with more than 150 million salmon every year. King salmon—the largest of the species, averaging about 36 inches and 30 pounds—kick off the spawning season in early spring, followed by sockeye, pink, and chum salmon.

Sign up for a sportfishing or fly-fishing excursion and try to reel in a salmon, halibut, trout, or any of the other fish species populating the waters near Juneau. Shore-bound anglers can try casting from the public fishing pier next to the hatchery on Channel Drive. To taste a local delicacy, stop by one of the area’s many fish houses, like the Hangar on the Wharf Pub and Grill or the Twisted Fish Company, both of which serve some of the freshest and most delicious seafood dishes in the city.
