Unusual Scents

These unconventional perfumes and colognes will make you sniff twice.

When Rei Kawakubo decided to launch a line of fragrances for her avant-garde fashion brand, Comme des Garçons, she envisioned a scent as unconventional as the looks she sent down the runway. Debuted in 1994, the first CDG perfume featured notes of kerosene, “grilled cigarettes,” drying laundry, burnt rubber, sticky tape, and industrial glue. More than two decades later, there are a bevy of brands brewing unusual scents to please the non-conformist within us all, just take a whiff.

CB I Hate Perfume

In the Library: Bookworms will love this fragrance made with a blend of English novel, Russian and Moroccan leather bindings, worn cloth, and a hint of wood polish.

Commes Des Garcon

Odeur 53: The quintessential anti-perfume features notes of oxygen, flaming rock, wash drying in the wind, sand dunes, and nail polish.

Malin And Goetz

Cannabis Perfume Oil: This intense scent is a spicy take on cannabis, with notes of pepper, citrus, and wood to create a unique and unexpected aroma that lasts.

Sushi: On the inexpensive side, Demeter has a wide of variety of scents from Funeral Home to Jelly Doughnut. Sushi has hints of freshly cooked sticky rice, seaweed, lemon, and ginger.
